I believe that lyrics are important, but most mainstream audiences won't give your music a chance if you don't have the proper production. If you have lyrics your production can always be upgraded but its not always the same the other way around.
I'd say subject matter, you gotta be able to talk about somethin that all folks can relate to. Production makes a nigga sound good though, i.e. Gucci Man who I think really cant rap but right song right beat, hey is a hit lol or whatever the fuck you wanna call it.
gucci man is ALL production I BEILVE tho like REAL CHOP cuz he REALLY cant RAP LOL

In my opinion I believe they have to have a sort of chemistry. They have to work together. If I had to choose one, I would say lyrics as an artist and producer because if the beat is smackin and the lyrics are'nt visual enough to carry the song then it will bomb. A lot of Tupac's early tracks to me were garbage but his lyrics was smashin so hard that it made the songs work.
I would have to agree, lyrics all day! If you ain't talkin about nothin than people aint listenin to you they listenin to the beat. Now if you say spit real talk you could have the simplest beat but people gon feel you!
I would have to say lyrics. You got artists who can spit fire but their beat sound like shit. You have artists that spits garbage and their beat is slappin. For example, Soljah Boy can't rap, but that is just my opinion. His production is pretty good though. His beats are decent. His flow gotta go though. I can't hate on him for grindin the way he does. I don't like the fact he is calling that shit the new hip-hop. Now as far as great lyrics and beats that don't slap, I've heard that in a lot of east coast underground shit. Not all, but is a good example. You can find that pretty much anywhere. Production is important and that would determine how good of a producer you have. Unless you do your own shit and you're not just a rapper. Clarity is important when you spit your lyrics and you gotta have a concept. Not shit you talk about in a freestyle. I can't rap along if your lyrics are garbage, period.
